Since 1996, it has been a lonely business for Microsoft, until the company's perennial rival, Apple, introduced the web-browsing, music-playing iPhone.

Andrew Lees, Vice President for Mobile Communications, Microsoft says, "The company has altered its cellphone software strategy."

Motorola is one of the cellphone giants which is switching to the free Android software. More cellphone makers are turning to the free Android OS made by Microsoft's latest nemesis, Google. Cellphone makers that have used Windows Mobile to run their top-of-the-line smartphones - including Samsung, LG, Kyocera, and Sony Ericsson, who are now also making Android devices. Twelve Android handsets have been announced this year, with dozens more expected next year. Motorola has dropped Windows Mobile from its line entirely in a switch to Android. HTC, a major cellphone maker, expects half its phones sold this year to run Android. Dell is also using Android for its entry into the cellphone market.

Now, all four of the largest carriers in the U.S. have agreed to offer Android Phones. When the first Android handset, the G1 from HTC was introduced last fall, only T-Mobile offered it. Now, Verizon, the largest carrier, is putting a huge promotional push behind the Droid from Motorola, set to be introduced this week. Even AT&T, the home of the iPhone, recently said that it would join the Android party next year.

Google is rapidly introducing updates to Android, each named after a bakery sweet. Version 1.5 (cupcake) came out in April, version 1.6 (donut) appeared in September. Version 2.0 is expected to appear on the Droid.

"A lot of manufacturers are walking into our office and talking about how important Android is becoming to them. Android is ramping with more manufacturers and more price points. It is going to have a pretty significant impact," said Cole Brodman, Chief Development Officer of T-Mobile, the first carrier to sell phones with Google's software.

According to Gartner, currently, Android is on only 1.8 percent of smartphone worldwide and Windows Mobile software still dwarfs Android. But Microsoft is slipping. The percentage of smartphones using the Windows Mobile system has plummeted to 9.3 percent, from 12 percent in the second quarter of 2008. Microsoft fell behind Apple, which shot up to 13.3 percent, from 2.8 percent. (Nokia's Symbian OS is the world leader, followed by Research In Motion's OS for its BlackBerry).

Android does have its share of doubters. "The industry has decided that Android is going to be a huge hit, but I'm skeptical. To have legs, you have to be a hit. The first three Android devices didn't connect with the mass market," said Tero Kuittinen, an Analyst with MKM Partners.

Nevertheless, Android is free, while Windows Mobile costs manufacturers $15 to $25 a phone. Google's software is intended for modern screens you tap with a finger, while Windows Mobile was built for use with a stylus. Android has attracted far more applications for consumers in the first year than Windows Mobile has in a decade. As a result, Android is winning over the world's largest cellphone makers.

One part of the appeal is that, unlike other OS, Android is open source software, so anyone can use or change it. "We have access to the source code. To do that on any other platform would be very difficult," said Sanjay Jha, Co-chief Executive of Motorola.

HTC, the Taiwanese cellphone company that has grown quickly in recent years making only Windows Mobile phones, also finds the customization attractive because Android phones allow users to add apps. "Customers are really embracing personalization, and Android brings that to the forefront," said Jason Mackenzie, Vice President for North America, HTC Windows Mobile, by contrast, appeals more to corporate computing managers who like how it connects to Microsoft's e-mail and office software.

source: http://www.siliconindia.com

Neesa Technologies Pvt. Now, Google is focusing more on business applications, which is a traditional Microsoft stronghold with Exchange on the server side and Microsoft Office on the client side. However, when it comes to putting their trust on the technology products, not many Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are in favor of Google.

Recently, TechRepublic polled a 90-member panel of U.S. IT executives and asked, "Who do they trust more as a technology partner, Microsoft or Google?" The jury - made up of the first 12 respondents - voted 8-4 in favor of Microsoft. Google is making the pitch to businesses that it can save them money, speed up deployments, and provide users with a simpler experience. However, the primary obstacle that Google has to overcome is to convince IT leaders to transfer company data from internal servers to the Google datacenters, with all of the security, privacy, and compliance risks that such a move entails, reports TechRepublic.

The skeptical attitude towards Google was summed up by Donna Trivison, Director of IT for Ursuline College, who said, "There seems to be some conventional wisdom that Google is the answer to what's been wrong over the years in the Microsoft universe. That kind of thinking may be dangerous. As consumers of technology, we need to keep each and every business partner honest and working for us. Handing trust carte blanche over to Google because, as the wisdom goes, they are good citizens, seems misguided to me. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Microsoft because they have withstood the scrutiny their misdeeds have landed them. Google remains, for the most part, untested."

When confronted with the Microsoft vs. Google question of trust, Lance Taylor Warren, CIO of H.A.W.C. Community Health Centers, said, "Neither. While some of the technology that Google has been releasing is intriguing, their track record of leaving things in 'beta' for years does not lead to a high level of confidence. Microsoft is Microsoft. If I had to pay full price for their products, I would have to give serious consideration to other solutions."

source: http://www.siliconindia.com

Neesa Technologies Pvt. Does this mean that Microsoft has succeeded with an advanced algorithm that is superior to Google’s? Or is it a fluke that the bounce rate is visibly lower than the other search engines.

The big question is how do we optimize our websites for Bing? We all want to be ranked at the top of this new search engine, which has the potential to take on the other major search engines.

From my observations domain age plays a big role. Bing wants to see websites that are established and have been around for a long period of time.

Bing seems to like websites with tons of original content on the landing pages.

Make sure your page titles are keyword rich and appropriate for the subject matter. Bing loves titles with keywords searchers are using. Make sure to have a good, unique title for all your websites pages.

Unlike other search engines, linking out seems to be favored. This means linking to other sites from your own site is good for ranking. This may show to Bing that your site shares useful information with its users. This is not to say reciprocal linking is good, but linking to sites that your users may deem valuable is a good idea.

Sign up for an account with Bing, manage your analytics and start a pay-per-click campaign with them. Their PPC rates are significantly lower than other PPC campaigns because there is not as much competition and keyword dilution occurring. In a few months to a year PPC costs will begin to mimic those of the other search engines, but for now the prices are superb.

You might also be interested in Pandia’s detailed Bing review

Neesa Technologies Pvt. My initial reaction was -Really? All the while I thought Gmail is the largest web mail service? The post was citing latest estimates by comScore wherein Gmail has gathered 37 million unique visitors in July, surpassing AOL, the no. 3 web mail service with its 36.4 million unique visitors in the U.S. So now officially, the three search giants are also the three major players in the web mail service. It’s about time.

Quite interestingly also, TC’s post has elicited tons of comments coming from all three camps - Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail users. The comments are quite interesting to read as well.

Some users are highlighting the privacy threats posed by using Gmail, while other have gone as far back as tracing the history of Yahoo getting ahead of the web mail battle.

Other points raised were regarding email storage capacity, less spam attacks, and what-have-you’s.

And here’s another interesting point, this issue came right after Google has announced that Gmail is now out of beta. The signal has been sent - Gmail is ready for battle. And Google is out to conquer the web mail arena the same way that they did with Google Search.

So, which web mail are you using? As for me, I’ve stopped using Yahoo Mail for my online business transactions in favor of Gmail. I still maintain my Yahoo Mail account but only for personal use since most of the groups I participate in was created under Yahoo Groups. Yahoo Groups is still the most used online discussion group and remains one of Yahoo Mail’s strongest points. May be Google should also start looking into Google Groups to compete effectively with Yahoo Mail.

Source by searchenginejournal

Neesa Technologies Pvt. As part of that gig, he resells Microsoft software. Today, he has a very specific gripe about the company.

Gary subscribes to Microsoft Action Pack, "a complete set of not-for-resale (NFR) Microsoft software programs that Microsoft's partners can use to help their own people fully understand -- and thus sell and maintain -- Microsoft software," he explains. The software and all the other sales resources offered through the program requires resellers to register, complete an online course, take an assessment, and pay an annual subscription fee.

"Microsoft sends us (or used to) a nice book with all the software on DVD," says Gary. "The company also ships us quarterly updates. These include new releases, marketing and service how-to guides, and other sales aids. The cost is $300 per year."

Gary has been happy with the program -- till recently. "Last month," he says, "Microsoft changed the program to digital delivery. Now they don't send us anything at all. I have to go to the Action Pack web site and download anything I want. Keep in mind, this is some 30 DVDs' worth of software and content." That is not an insignificant task for an already stretched IT team.

"This is an excellent cost saving for Microsoft," Gary points out. Indeed, it saves the company the cost of the paper, printing, disks, and disk reproduction, as well as shipping. "But Microsoft didn't bother to share the savings with its partners," he says.

Gary estimates that Microsoft's cost for delivering this product went from thousands -- if not millions -- of dollars to something closer to zero. Meanwhile, the effort he has to put into using the product increased, "but the price I pay is unchanged at $300 per year," he says. Now, if Gary wants a hard copy of the printed materials that he can pass around the office as he has in the past, he'll need to pay an additional $200 per year -- a hefty price increase to maintain the status quo.

"If I pulled something like this on my customers," he says, "they'd throw me out of the building." So Gary called Microsoft to complain. "Their response was, basically, 'We are sorry you don't like it, would you like to renew your subscription now?'"

source: http://www.infoworld.com/

Neesa Technologies Pvt. Microsoft's top Windows Executive said in a blog posting that the issue appears to be neither widespread, nor the "showstopper" that some are claiming it to be. "While we appreciate the drama of 'critical bug' and then the pickup of 'showstopper' that I've seen, we might take a step back and realize that this might not have that defcon level," said Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows Division at Microsoft in a discussion in one of the blogs.

Few sites had reported that Windows 7 would use all the available memory to perform check for problems in a particular disk which will lead to system crash. But Microsoft has blamed a chipset controller issue rather than a critical bug in the Windows 7 chkdsk/r tool that could cause this memory leak. Microsoft has advised that updating the chipset drivers to the current driver supplied by their motherboard manufacturer would solve this problem.

Sinofsky also said that they are continuously monitoring Windows 7 and would tackle any issue that arises. "Bugs that are so severe as to require immediate patches and attention would have to have no workarounds and would generally be such that a large set of people would run across them in the normal course of using their PC. So far this is not one of those issues," he added.

Microsoft has also announced the RC (release candidate) version of Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. Upgrading an enterprise environment to a new operating system is a big task and it will be difficult to update or upgrade individual applications, or worse, replacing business critical applications in order to find something that works with the new operating system. This virtualized edition of Windows XP SP3 will help organizations who want to upgrade to Windows 7 but still use applications from XP.

Microsoft had finalized the code for Windows 7 two weeks ago and is now preparing to release it to developers in Microsoft's MSDN and Technet programs. Windows 7 will also be available to some large businesses, by this week. First, Google announced its first operating system, Chrome. Then Microsoft announced the new version of Office with major cloud applications support. To increase its presence in the search engine market, Microsoft recently announced its deal to take over Yahoo's search business. Now, Google has announced the launch of its new promotional campaign called 'Going Google.'

The main target of 'Going Google' campaign is to topple Microsoft's hold in office applications. Google will soon launch a series of advertisements which will boast why some 3,000 organizations are signing up to use Google applications each day. Google claims that so far over 1.75 million businesses, schools and organizations have signed up to use the various combinations of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and the other Google apps. Currently, Microsoft Office has the highest market share for office related applications. Google is trying to be proactive in telling people why its solution is better than Microsoft Office.

Google will be heavily investing in the 'Going Google' campaign and it plans to advertise through billboards on four major U.S. highways that will give a new message about Google apps everyday for a month. The billboards will be placed on the 101 in San Francisco, the West Side Highway in New York, the Ike in Chicago, and Mass Pike in Boston.

Google is also attempting to use Twitter platform to spread the 'Going Google' message. At the bottom of its blog post on the matter, Google urges people who use its apps to 'Tweet your story' and provides a link to auto-populate a tweet with the #gonegoogle hashtag. You can also follow the GoogleAtWork Twitter account to follow the Gone Google stories.

Google also plans to use 'Spread the Word' campaign, which will be similar to Mozilla's campaign to promote Firefox. Google will also try to use the conventional way of sending fliers and pre-populated emails to promote its 'Going Google' campaign.

source: http://www.siliconindia.com

Neesa Technologies Pvt. In a denial-of-service attack a Web site or server is bombarded with more traffic than it can handle, effectively causing online congestion. Such attacks are done from multiple computers and usually hackers send malware data to the target site in unison. After initial denial of any such attack, both Facebook and Twitter have now acknowledged attack on their site by denial-of-service attack.

In a blog hosted on an unaffected server, Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone acknowledged the attack. "Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate," he added.

Twitter had declared their scaling problems in early 2007. And as much as the great Twitter outages of 2007 and 2008 frustrated users, these outages are much more serious. Twitter has come a long way since 2007 as 45 million people worldwide now rely on Twitter as a communication platform. They will have to scale if they really want to be the 'Pulse of the Planet.'

Facebook issued an early statement on its site saying that, "Earlier this morning, Facebook encountered network issues related to an apparent distributed denial-of-service attack that resulted in degraded service for some users. No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users. We're continuing to monitor the situation to ensure that users have the fast and reliable experience they've come to expect from Facebook." As compared to Twitter, Facebook and Google were able to minimize any impact to their sites along with sites such as Blogger, YouTube and other Google Sites.

Pingdom, a site that tracks server uptime, states that Twitter was offline for about two and a half hours. Last time, Twitter was down due to unplanned downtime was on May 30 this year due to a software error. Denial-of-service attacks are becoming common nowadays. According to Information week, Gawker Media sites and AT&T were hit with it earlier this week. Last week, Internet Systems Consortium warned that BIND 9, the most common domain name server, contained a vulnerability that could be exploited to crash the server, leading to a denial-of-service. The company said that the vulnerability is actively being exploited and it urged users of the software to update immediately.

Amongst all this commotion an interesting piece of news has emerged. A pro-Georgian blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google's Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial-of-service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites, according to a Facebook executive. "It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard. We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can," said Max Kelly, Chief Security Officer at Facebook to CNET. The blogger whose account was attacked uses the account name 'Cyxymu' (the name of a town in the Republic of Georgia). Kelly declined to speculate on whether Russian nationalists were behind the attack.

source: http://www.siliconindia.com

Neesa Technologies Pvt.
